How to Not Become a Beauty School Dropout
Attending beauty school is as challenging and rewarding as attending 4-year university or any other trade school program. The demands of cosmetology classes and projects, as well as the burden of financing your education can be overwhelming as you make your way through cosmetology school. Success in beauty school takes discipline and persistence. If you want to achieve your goals of starting a career in hair, skin care, makeup, and styling, here are some tips to help you stay in school.
First, choose the right beauty school to enroll in. Cosmetology schools are as unique and varied as the students who attend them, and there are many options, from community college programs, to private trade schools and online cosmetology courses.
Many community colleges offer affordable Associate's degrees in cosmetology. There are also Private institutes, such as the Empire Beauty School, offer more prestige degree, but at a higher price. Cosmetology programs that allow you to complete courses online are ideal for working students.
Understand the requirements of the beauty program before you enroll. Find out how many credit hours you need to take each semester in order to graduate on time, how many years it takes to complete the degree on average, and how many hours of practical experience are required. Also investigate whether the beauty school has a career placement program to help you find a job once you earn your degree.
Make a financial plan to pay for cosmetology courses, books, and supplies. The tuition for most beauty schools does not include the price of cosmetology textbooks and technician supplies, which can be hefty. Although you can write off some of your educational expenses when you file your taxes, you may need to take out loans or apply for fellowships.
Often, promising students drop out of cosmetology school is because they cannot afford the courses. Careful financial planning will help you avoid this. Call the school's financial aid office to find information on grants, payment plans, or scholarships.
Meet with your instructors to discuss your progress. If you want more feedback, you'll have to ask for it, since there are many students who divide the instructors' attentions. Your teachers may not have time during class for one-on-one conversations, but you can always ask for advice outside of class.
Practice good study habits. When you need to complete written assignments, go to a quiet library where there are no distractions. Prepare for the licensing exam early so that you are ready to take the test when you graduate. Review your course notes periodically and compare the material to the contents of the exam. Make sure that you are learning everything that you need to know for the cosmetology licensing exam.
Consider taking courses in business, marketing, web design, or accounting. These will be useful if you want to work in management, or start your own salon.
