How to Make a Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Sourdough Bread
A grilled cheese sandwich is both a classic comfort food, and a source of endless creative variations. One of the most delicious recipes for grilled cheese uses the traditional ingredients with a tangy twist of sourdough bread.
Ingredients (per sandwich):
2 slices sourdough
1 slice swiss cheese
1 slice pepper jack cheese
2 tbsp softened butter
Optional: tomato soup, bacon, ham, onion, tomato, or apple slices
Warm the griddle or skillet to medium low and place 1 tbsp of butter in the pan. While the butter is melting, place two slices of cheese in between the slices of sourdough bread. For a more interesting and heartier grilled cheese sandwich, place slices of ham, cooked bacon, fresh onions, tomatoes or apples between the slices of cheese. Spread the remaining 1 tbsp of butter on top of the ungrilled sandwich.
Place the cheese sandwich in the pan, buttered side up. Press down on the sandwich with a spatula just before you flip the grilled cheese and cook the other side. The sourdough grilled cheese will be done when both sides are lightly golden brown and the cheese is gooey.
For a classic healthy meal, serve sourdough grilled cheese sandwiches with rich tomato soup and a side salad.
