Natural Remedies to Reduce Acne Scars and Fade Macules
Scars and macules are the visible remainders of acne, long after your skin has stopped erupting in pimples and whiteheads. Scars are may be either shallow depressions or raised patches; macules are flat spots of darker discoloration. Dermabrasion and chemical peels are the most common post-acne treatment for restoring skin tone and smoothness, but both procedures are quite expensive.
There are many natural home remedies and over-the-counter products that can lighten macules and diminish the appearance of ance scars. For best results, try these remedies after you have washed and dried your face.
Cut a chilled lemon cross-wise into circles that are 1/4 to 1/2 an inch thick. Hold the slices on your skin wherever you have heavy acne scarring or discoloration. You can lie on your back and face the ceiling so that you don't have to hold lemon slices in place. Leave them on your face for about 15 to 20 minutes. Let the juice dry on your skin and don't rinse it off. It may sting a little if you have an active outbreak, but lemon has many natural healing properties. You can also use limes.
Aloe Vera Gel
Another natural remedy for scars is aloe vera gel. The highest quality gel comes from a freshly broken leaf, but you can also buy gel from the drugstore. Before you go to bed at night, spread a thin layer of aloe gel over your scars and macules.
Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E may help reduce the appearance of scars and macules in some people. After you wash your face, use a q-tip to dab vitamin E oil over your acne scars. You can get the oil in a bottle, or break open a vitamin E capsule. Eating foods that are rich in this vitamin also promotes healing.
Sunlight is a great natural remedy for macules. Expose your skin for about 15 to 20 minutes during the sun's peak and skip the sunblock. If you are prone to burning you should either use a low SPF sunscreen, or try this remedy in the afternoon when the sun's rays are less intense.
Tea Tree Oil
Products that are infused with tea tree oil are great for treating active breakouts and minimizing the appearance of scars and macules. These products can cause excessive drying, and they often have a strong minty smell, so it's best to use them before you go to bed.
Over-the-Counter Scar Gel
Products for diminishing regular scars can also help diminish raised acne scars. Most products need to be applied daily for two or three months for best results. If the product is working for you, you should see some reduction in redness and bumpiness after a month.
Macules actually fade over time. For most people, dark spots from prior acne breakouts will clear in six months, though in some people it can take up to a year. If you have macules from several years ago, talk to a dermatologist about treatments that can make your skin tone more even.
