How to Remove Speckled Paint from Wood Furniture
Speckle painting (not to be confused with spackle!) is method of finishing wood furniture with tiny flecks of colored, white, or black paint. You can apply speckled paint to hardwood furniture after applying an even coat of stain, clear coat, or solid colored paint.
Speckled paint looks charming in some decor styles, but it can look tacky if most of your other furntiture is traditional. Fortunately, it is very easy to remove speckled paint if you don't like it anymore. The steps below also work for furniture pieces that have a few errant flecks of paint ruining the finish.
(1) First, put on a face mask and set up your work station in a well-ventilated room.
(2) Soak a cotton rag in mineral spirits or other solvent, and vigorously rub the speckles to soften and dissolve the paint. If the wood has a finish beneath the specked paint, some of this will also come off.
(3) Once the paint has dissolved to your satisfaction, let the piece dry, then wipe the entire wooden surface with one last application of solvent.
(4) When the wood has completely dried, use very fine sandpaper to remove the last traces of paint. Sand in circular motions first, then sand in the direction of the grain so the sanding marks are less visible.
(5) Brush off the sawdust and wipe the furniture with a wet rag. When the wood is dry again, apply at least two coats of polyurethane, or other finish. Let the coats cure for at least 12 hours between applications. If the speckled paint is still slightly visible, you can use a darker varnish to hide it.
