Wallpaper is economical way to decorate a room if you don't have the budget for paintings and wall art. Richly patterned wallpaper in either traditonal or trendy styles can make kitchens, family rooms, and bedrooms look more inviting. You can apply wallpaper to the entire height of the wall, or just the area above the wainscoting.

To accurately estimate the total length of paper needed, you must first measure the perimeter of the room, the height of the wall area where paper is to be applied, and the width of the wallpaper rolls. In the US, most rolls are 27 inches wide, but it depends on the manufacturer.

Divide the perimeter of the room (in feet) by the width of the paper (in inches), then multiply by 12. Next, multiply this number by the height of the area you want to wallpaper. This is gives the linear feet of wallpaper needed, not counting any windows or doors. To get a more accurate estimate, subtract about 6 feet for each door and 3 feet for each window.

When purchasing rolls of wallpaper, you should buy about 10% to 15% more than you need to allow for trimming, and to be on the safe side in case you make a mistake when applying the paper.
