How to Choose Between a Citrus Press and Juicer
Store bought orange juice and grapefruit juice just cannot compare to freshly squeezed citrus juice made in your own kitchen. There is a such a wide range of juicers and citrus presses on the market, each catering to different kinds of consumers, how can decide which appliance is the right one for you? If you want to make your own orange juice at home, this guide will help you select the best citrus press or juicer for your needs.
First, consider the kinds of fruit juices you actually drink. If you want a machine that can do more than press citrus pulp, then a traditional juicer is the right appliance for you, since it can process almost any kind of fruit, not just oranges and grapefruits.
Consider your preferred consistency of orange juice and grapefruit juice. If you like fresh juice that that has the same transparency as bottled pulp-free juice, you should buy a citrus press. A citrus press squeezes out all the delicious juice from the fruit, leaving most of the pulp behind.
If, however, you prefer "whole" juices--liquid, pulp, and even some of the rind--then you should purchase a juicer. A high-quality juicer has a pulp catcher that separates the solid from the liquid, allowing you to add some pulp back into the juice. With a juicer, getting some pulp and rind material is unavoidable, and the resulting juice is thicker and frothier. Plus, the solid matter of the fruit contains many of its key nutrients.
Also think about appliance longevity and electric vs. manual. An electric power juicer is easier to use, but it needs to be replaced every several years if you run it every day. A manual citrus press, while it may be more physically difficult to use, lasts much longer.
Don't forget to consider your budget. A juicer may cost between $50 and $150 depending on the quality, size, and special features. A citrus press is usually $25 to $75. High-end presses may be made from stronger materials and have an attached juice pitcher.
Purchase a juicer if you value its versatility and the health benefits of homemade juice. Buy a citrus press if you want a moderately priced appliance, and if you mostly drink grapefruit and orange juice.
